Steps for Making Your Own CBD Oil

March 24, 2020

How to Make CBD in the Comfort of your Home

Are you one of those people who likes DIY projects and making your own goods? Brewing your own beer or making your own edibles are relatively common do-it-yourself projects, but many people likely aren’t aware that you can make your own CBD oil as well.

Making your own CBD oil isn’t the right pastime for everyone, and in most cases it’s going to be easier to purchase high-quality CBD oil from a reputable company that maintains strict quality control measures and performs thorough lab testing for potency and safety.

That being said, many people simply prefer making this kind of thing themselves. If you make it then you know exactly what you’re putting into the recipe. If you’re concerned about toxic chemicals or dangerous substances making their way into your store-bought CBD, making your own CBD oil may be the way to go.

If making CBD sounds like something you’d be interested in trying out for yourself, here are the basic steps you should take.
  1. Acquire hemp flower. You’ll likely want to use hemp flower rather than marijuana. Hemp is legal thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, whereas marijuana is still illegal in most states. There are a variety of websites out there that allow you to buy industrial hemp legally. You can also purchase it from local CBD stores or dispensaries in many areas. The hemp flower you use will determine the potency of your oil. If you want CBD oil with high THC content you can choose an appropriate flower for you needs.
  2. Choose your solvent/carrier oil. You can use MCT (medium chain triglyceride) oil, coconut oil, hempseed oil, olive oil or even butter.
  3. Grind up the flower. You will want to get the flower ground up into fine little crumbs.
  4. Decarboxylate (decarb) your ground flower. In order to activate the CBD, which allows it to be more easily absorbed by the body, spread the ground flower on to a cookie sheet. You can cover the cookie sheet in tin foil first to make moving it and cleanup easier. Bake it in the oven at around 220 or 225 for an hour. Then pull it out and let the flower cool.
  5. Put the cooled flower in a bowl or the top part of your double boiler and add your carrier oil. You can do this with a regular heat-resistant bowl (like a Pyrex bowl) and a pot or even a crockpot. You’ll essentially want to mix together the flower and your oil and then put the bowl on top of a pot of simmering water. Not boiling water – just simmering water. You’ll likely want to leave the pot on low heat to prevent the water from boiling. It’s important not to scorch the oil/flower mixture. Leave the oil and flower on the simmering water for two to three hours to allow the CBD to totally dissolve into the oil.
  6. Pour the mixture through a cheesecloth (or coffee filter if you simply can’t get cheesecloth) to strain out the flower. Make sure to squeeze out all the oil you can from the cloth and plant matter so you’re wasting as little as possible.
  7. Put the oil in a jar or vial and store somewhere cool and dark for future use.
Your homemade oil can be used just like store bought CBD oil. Use it as a tincture, make edibles with it, put it in capsules – your ingestion method is entirely up to you.

Using CBD Isolate, CBD Crystals or CBD Powder

The only problem with making your own CBD at home is it can be hard to determine dosage and strength. That’s one of the reasons many people prefer to use CBD Isolate or CBD Crystals. You can purchase these dry forms of CBD in CBD dispensaries or online, and they have the benefit of coming with specific potencies. If you buy 500 mgs of CBD crystals then use the above process but instead of using the flower itself you mix the crystals with your carrier oil, then you’ll know exactly how much CBD is in your homemade oil and you can adjust doses accordingly.
