CBD vs CBN vs CBG: What Are the Differences Between These Cannabinoids?

different types of cannabinoids

Cannabis plants are home to a rich variety of substances that can be found in many natural health products. Cannabinoids (special chemicals found in the cannabis plant) are commonly used as dietary supplements, but can also be found in beauty products like body lotions, massage oils, soaps and serums.

Since the implementation of the Farm Bill in 2018, hemp and hemp-derived substances, including CBD, CBN and CBG, can be used legally in most states. This has opened many doors for both users and manufacturers of hemp-derived products, which are believed to offer a variety of health benefits.

Even though CBD, CBN and CBG are all cannabinoids, each compound has different therapeutic properties. So, what exactly is the difference between CBD, CBN and CBG, and how can you determine which option is best for you?

CBD

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a non-intoxicating substance found in cannabis plants. It was discovered by American chemist Roger Adams in 1940. CBD can be purchased in a variety of forms, including gummies, tinctures, pills and topicals. Experts and users believe it alleviates a plethora of symptoms and conditions, including:

  • Chronic pain
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Epilepsy
  • Joint inflammation
  • Sore muscles
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Skin problems, like acne or eczema

CBD’s benefits are being closely studied. In 2018, the FDA approved the first CBD pharmaceutical under the name of Epidiolex. The drug is designed to treat rare and severe forms of epilepsy.

CBN

CBN, short for cannabinol, is a byproduct of THC. As THC in a hemp plant degrades from age and exposure to heat, it converts to CBN. Even though it comes from THC, cannabinol doesn’t exhibit any intoxicating effects, thus it doesn’t make users feel “high.”

CBN, which was first discovered in 1930 by British chemist Robert Sidney Conn, offers some potential health and wellness benefits:

  • May promote bone healing and growth
  • Due to its mildly sedating properties (especially when combined with other cannabinoids), it can help treat insomnia and promote relaxation
  • Anti-inflammatory properties can help alleviate chronic pain and inflammation
  • Can stimulate your appetite

Research into CBN is still in its infancy. There’s less CBN interest in the medical community compared to CBD or THC, which are the subject of many ongoing studies.

CBG

CBG, also known as cannabigerol, is a non-intoxicating acid that is present in the cannabis plant in the initial stages of the plant’s development. As the acid decomposes, it forms a variety of other smaller acids, which eventually turn into THC, CBD or other cannabinoids.

The “stem cell” of cannabis was discovered in 1964 by Israeli chemists Raphael Mechoulam and Yehiel Gaoni. It is in high demand for people who are prescribed marijuana-based treatments for neurological and psychiatric issues.

Some possible conditions CBG is believed to help with include:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Acute and chronic pain
  • Lack of appetite
  • Inflammation in the body
  • Bladder dysfunction
  • Glaucoma (eye condition that causes blindness)

CBG is also being evaluated to treat Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease.

Which Cannabinoid Is Right for You?

There is no right or wrong answer here. If you’re thinking about adding cannabinoid products to your daily routine, pick one that’s most suited for the symptoms you’re trying to alleviate. Typically, CBD products are easiest to get because they are the cheapest to produce and many CBD products are legal and already widely available, even in states where marijuana is illegal.

People looking for enhanced results can try products that contain a full spectrum of cannabinoids, such as Charlotte’s Web CBD oils. Regardless of which type of product you choose, be sure to give it sufficient time to reap long-term benefits.

If you’re suffering from a serious health condition, always consult your doctor before adding lesser-known cannabinoids to your treatment.
