Is CBD Oil a Good Alternative to Melatonin or Other Supplements for Insomnia?

Some people need less sleep than others and can function relatively well even after an occasional night of tossing and turning. However, if your difficulties with falling asleep persist, you may have a tough time getting through your days.

Sleep deprivation can drain your energy and negatively affect your mood, health and overall well-being. If you’ve suffered from too many sleepless nights, you may consider taking a sleep aide to ease your insomnia and get some much-needed slumber.

Over-the-Counter Sleep Aids

Over-the-counter sleep medication can be a safe alternative to pharmaceuticals and aide you in getting a good night's sleep. However, just like any other medication it can have side effects and it’s recommended that you speak with your doctor first before you decide to take any. They can also be quite dangerous if you take more than the recommended dosage, or a child gets ahold of the medication.

Some natural sleep remedies, like vitamins, are less likely to not cause any side effects if you adhere to the recommended dose.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone your body makes to help you fall asleep. When you go to bed in a dark room, your body typically produces enough melatonin to facilitate sleep. However, that’s not always the case and people with low levels of melatonin have the option to supplement their naturally produced hormone with an over-the-counter, lab-made alternative. While melatonin is likely safe for short-term use, it can cause some significant side effects, like headache, nausea or dizziness. If you’ve taken melatonin, you should refrain from driving or operating machinery for at least five hours.

Aromatherapy

Some essential oils like lavender, frankincense and chamomile flower can be used as all-natural sleep aids. Typically, people add a small amount (no more than three drops) into a diffuser and let the scent penetrate the air. Although essential oils are a relatively safe and noninvasive method of treating sleep problems, their effectiveness is highly questionable. They can also be toxic if used improperly. You should never ingest essential oils as they may be poisonous. Also, children and women who are breastfeeding should generally avoid using essential oils.

Bedtime Tea

A warm cup of tea can help you relax and get ready for bed. Many grocery stores carry a variety of bedtime teas that are made of herbs like chamomile or valerian root to promote rest. While these herbs have been used as natural sleep remedies for centuries, and in some cases millennia, there hasn't been enough research to prove their effectiveness beyond a placebo effect. Some people who try herbal tea may be turned off by its bitter taste and decide it’s not their cup of tea after all. Also, drinking tea right before bedtime may cause you to wake up in the middle of the night with a full bladder.

Prescription Medication

If you’ve had little success in treating your insomnia with natural remedies, your doctor may prescribe you sleeping pills to alleviate your condition. There are several prescription medications available for short-term and long-term use. Some examples include Lunesta, Sonata and Ambien. Unfortunately, like any other medication, sleeping pills can cause several side effects, like dependency, drowsiness, weight gain and more.

Can CBD Oil Help You Get a Good Night’s Sleep?

CBD oil is becoming increasingly popular for alleviating a plethora of conditions like muscle pain, muscle spasms, anxiety and insomnia. Unlike other cannabis products, cannabidiol (CBD) won’t cause you to “get high.” While research on the effectiveness of CBD oil is still in its infancy, there is some reasonable evidence that CBD can alleviate insomnia symptoms.

Many consumers claim that CBD has helped them with anxiety, chronic pain and sleeping disorders. Some people, especially those with anxiety, report that CBD helps relax their body, stops the mind from racing and ultimately promotes sleep without the morning drowsiness commonly experienced by people who take powerful pharmaceutical sleep aids.

As with any supplement or vitamin routine, you might not experience remarkable results right away. However, consistently taking CBD before bed over a couple of weeks will likely help alleviate your insomnia, with increasingly positive results as the CBD builds up in your system.
